Ambulatory surgery centers. Ambulatory surgery centers, also known as outpatient surgery centers, same day surgery centers, or surgicenters, are health care facilities where surgical procedures not requiring an overnight hospital stay are performed. Such surgery is commonly less complicated than that requiring ng hospitalization can result in cost savings to the party. Minimally invasive procedures (also known as minimally invasive surgeries) encompass surgical techniques that limit the size of incisions needed and so lessen wound healing time, associated pain and risk of infection. Surgery by definition is invasive and many operations requiring incisions of some size are referred to as open surgery, in which incisions made can sometimes leave large wounds.

Most commonly an outpatient procedure, a laparoscopy uses a laparoscope, a thin, lighted tube with a video camera that is inserted through a small abdominal incision. The camera projects the internal images on a computer screen. The surgeon then views the area to examine organs and can also perform corrective surgery. Uterine artery embolization (often referred to as “uterine fibroid embolization” or “UFE”) is an innovative outpatient procedure most commonly used to treat symptomatic fibroids. It can also be performed to improve adenomyosis symptoms. This minimally invasive treatment option .

Reproductive surgery via an open abdominal incision (laparotomy) is uncommon today, except in select cases of uterine fibroids or severe endometriosis and scarring. Laparoscopy, an outpatient procedure through small abdominal incision, is also performed less frequently today and is no longer considered a routine part of infertility evaluation.

Robotic surgery is a form of laparoscopy. Laparoscopy is minimally invasive surgery, usually performed in an outpatient setting.
